Russia trades MiG‑29s for North Korean support in Ukraine
Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific, stated that the Russians would transfer MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets to North Korea in exchange for military support in Ukraine. Pyongyang can also expect the transfer of ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defense technologies.
Admiral Samuel Paparo discussed the potential transfer of Russian MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters to North Korea during the Reagan National Defense Forum. However, he did not specify the number of aircraft involved. The decision follows the deployment of 12,000 North Korean soldiers to Ukraine to support the Russian army. According to Paparo, these soldiers are not actively engaged in combat but are deployed in the conflict zone.
Russians may transfer fighters to the Koreans
In his opinion, North Korea likely expects even more support from Russia. Paparo mentioned ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defense technologies, which would significantly strengthen Pyongyang's military position in the region. The commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific also noted that although the MiG-29 and Su-27 are aging and not fifth-generation fighters, they are still "formidable" machines. What is known about them?
The MiG-29, also known as the "Fulcrum," is one of the most well-known Soviet multi-role fighters, introduced in the 1980s. This aircraft is equipped with two Klimov RD-33 engines, allowing for a maximum speed of approximately 1,500 mph. Its operational range is up to 930 miles, and it can reach an altitude of about 59,000 feet.
The MiG-29 is highly maneuverable and primarily used for air defense and air support missions. It can also be used for assault operations, thanks to its ability to carry various armaments, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
The Su-27, often called the "Flanker," is another flagship Soviet-designed fighter built for air superiority, primarily used for intercepting and engaging enemy aircraft. It is known for its excellent maneuverability and ability to operate at high altitudes. The Su-27 reaches a maximum speed of 1,566 mph and has a range exceeding 1,864 miles with additional fuel tanks. Its extensive operational range and maneuverability make it an ideal choice for long-distance defensive and offensive missions.
