Russia trades MiG‑29s for North Korean support in Ukraine

Admiral Samuel Paparo discussed the potential transfer of Russian MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters to North Korea during the Reagan National Defense Forum. However, he did not specify the number of aircraft involved. The decision follows the deployment of 12,000 North Korean soldiers to Ukraine to support the Russian army. According to Paparo, these soldiers are not actively engaged in combat but are deployed in the conflict zone.

In his opinion, North Korea likely expects even more support from Russia. Paparo mentioned ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defense technologies, which would significantly strengthen Pyongyang's military position in the region. The commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific also noted that although the MiG-29 and Su-27 are aging and not fifth-generation fighters, they are still "formidable" machines.
