Russia shores up Syrian ties with covert oil and gas supply

Russia is supplying Syria with oil and gas to maintain its military bases, even though it has not extradited the former dictator Bashar al-Assad to the new authorities. These actions aim to strengthen Moscow's influence in the region, as reported by "The Moscow Times".

In February 2025, Russia began supplying oil and gas to Syria to sustain its military presence in the country. This decision was made on the orders of President Vladimir Putin, according to "The Moscow Times". The deliveries are carried out discreetly, as confirmed by sources connected to the Kremlin's foreign policy.

After the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces supported by Turkey, Russia found itself in a difficult situation, losing allies in Syria.

Assad under Putin's protection

Nevertheless, Moscow does not intend to extradite Assad to the new authorities, as doing so could harm Putin's authority. Russia seeks to rebuild relations with the new government by offering energy support and assistance in rebuilding infrastructure.

Russian oil is being delivered to Syria despite sanctions imposed by the West. Tankers from Russia, such as Sakina and Aquatica, are bringing resources to Syrian ports to help stabilize the country's energy situation.

Russia hopes to maintain influence in the region by offering support in the fight against terrorism and in the country's reconstruction.
