Russia set to unveil Su‑57 fighter at Rio's defense show
Russia is preparing to participate in the LAAD 2025 defense exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, where it will showcase its advanced weapons systems, including the Su-57 fighter jet. This will be the first time the aircraft is displayed in South America. Rosoboronexport, the Russian arms exporter, has confirmed its presence at the event, which starts on April 1.
Russia is attempting to increase the export of its modern combat aircraft, which have not yet gained significant interest in foreign markets. These efforts include participating in international air shows. Previously, the Su-57 made its debut at shows in China and India, where Russia offered to sell these aircraft with technology transfers and joint production. Soon, the jet will appear at the LAAD 2025 defense exhibition in Rio de Janeiro.
Russian strategy in Latin America
Russia is striving to increase its presence in Latin America, a region where its arms exports have declined in recent years. Participating in the exhibition in Brazil aims to reverse this trend. According to The EurAsian Times, Russia plans to work with countries in the region on the design and production of precision weapon systems and drones.
The outlet also notes that despite production issues and international sanctions, Russia claims to have overcome technological and logistical challenges, which could help boost exports. Rosoboronexport has already signed contracts worth over 4.5 billion dollars with 15 countries in 2025, indicating growing interest in Russian weaponry.
Russian fifth-generation fighter jet
The Su-57 is a Russian fifth-generation fighter jet equipped with stealth technology and advanced combat systems designed to provide an advantage on the battlefield. Its active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar allows it to detect and track targets at long distances, which is crucial in modern armed conflicts. Additionally, the Su-57 possesses a passive IRST system that functions like an undetectable radar, enhancing its ability to detect enemy units without revealing its position.
The Su-57 can carry a wide range of weaponry. Its internal bays can hold air-to-air missiles such as the K-77M and R-74M2 and air-to-ground missiles, including precision-guided bombs like the KAB-250 and KAB-500. Additionally, the Su-57 can be equipped with cruise missiles like the Kh-38M and Kh-58UShK, allowing it to strike ground targets from long distances effectively.
