Russia sees record surge in antidepressant sales amid crisis
The demand for antidepressants is increasing in Russia. In 2024, sales reached a record level, rising by 20 percent compared to the previous year. The "Kommersant" portal reports that by November, 16.1 million packages were sold.
More Russian residents are turning to pharmacological means to combat depression, as sales have hit a record high.
According to the "Kommersant" portal, this surge in demand for these drugs is linked to political events, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Cultural norms are also changing, with more people becoming aware of mental health issues and recognizing the need to seek professional help in such situations.
Increased demand for antidepressants in Russia: no prospects
The growing demand for antidepressants is confirmed by the Center for Advanced Technology Development. After the invasion of Ukraine, sales of these substances tripled within the first month.
The rise in demand for antidepressants in Russia is also associated with problems in their availability. As noted by Nikolai Bespalov, director of a Russian pharmaceutical company, patients are experiencing difficulties purchasing certain medications.
Approximately 15 million Russians suffer from severe depression, which constitutes over 10 percent of the Russian population. The most common causes of poor mental health in society are prolonged illness or the death of a loved one, domestic violence, and high debts. Additionally, the political situation also affects mental well-being.
The Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) reached these conclusions during a long-term study involving about 40,000 people. According to Svetlana Chupsheva, general director of ASI, many people struggle with depression and loneliness. This is a global challenge today, affecting not only Russia.
