Russia scores big in historic talks with the United States
During the talks between representatives of the United States and the Russian Federation in Riyadh, Moscow achieved its goals, while Washington did not secure any successes, according to Keir Giles from the British think tank Chatham House. The meeting was the first of its kind since the onset of Russian aggression in Ukraine three years ago.
On Tuesday in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, envoys from Russia and the United States met at the negotiating table. This was the first meeting of its kind since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the primary topic being the war in Ukraine.
Analyst Keir Giles from the British think tank Chatham House highlighted that the Americans achieved nothing. The Briton noted that analysts did not expect the meeting to benefit anyone other than Russia.
Russia gains from talks, returns to the international stage
Giles said that Russia achieved precisely what it intended to achieve, and the United States, unsurprisingly, achieved nothing - neither for itself nor its allies. Initial reports from the talks suggest that Russia has regained the status of a country worthy of diplomatic discussions.
According to Giles, the talks in Riyadh fulfilled a promise made by Trump to Putin. Russia returned not as a war criminal but as an equal partner meeting with the U.S. president.
This was Russia's primary goal when it initiated these talks. Thus, three years after the aggression against its neighbor, the Russian leader managed to shift his position in the international community.
