Russia reportedly acquires Starlink to boost battlefield edge

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported in its latest analysis that Russians illegally obtained Starlink terminals to technologically match Ukraine. It remains unclear how Russians bypass sanctions to acquire equipment that is officially unavailable to them.

"By illegally acquiring Starlink terminals, Russians seek to enhance their combat coordination and improve the effectiveness of their strike reconnaissance," analysts explained.

Starlink terminals in Russian hands

Starlink is a project of SpaceX, an American company owned by Elon Musk. Its goal is to provide satellite internet access anywhere on Earth. It operates through satellites orbiting the Earth and terminals allowing signal reception. This technology can provide internet access even in areas lacking traditional network infrastructure. Satellite internet from SpaceX's Starlink was launched over Ukraine at the beginning of 2022.

Ukrainian military personnel from the Donetsk region told "The Washington Post" that Starlink terminals are increasingly seen at Russian positions. The illegally obtained technology helps Russians resolve issues related to combat coordination and communication.

According to Ukrainians, the arrival of terminals has reduced the number of intercepted Russian radio transmissions. Ukrainian soldiers also believe that Starlink has contributed to recent Russian territorial gains.

"Access to Starlink terminals has given Ukraine a technological advantage, allowing for more effective coordination of combat operations and the implementation of new reconnaissance solutions. Russian forces are likely trying to diminish this advantage by increasing their own use of terminals," ISW summarized.

The first reports of Starlink terminals in Russian hands began to emerge several months ago. In September, a Russian Shahed-136 drone, equipped with this satellite communication from SpaceX, was shot down over Ukraine. This suggested that Starlink terminals are becoming increasingly accessible to Putin's army.
