The Ukrainian portal Kyiv Independent highlighted that on September 19, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that 40,000 enemy soldiers were stationed there. That was the last official report on the number of Russian troops in the Kursk region.
Even though Ukrainian forces have managed to maintain their positions in Kursk for about two months, on Thursday, the Ukrainian project for mapping war activities, DeepState, assessed that Russian forces have achieved a tactical success on the left flank of the front. Furthermore, around the area of Novoiivanivka, the Russians are trying to establish a foothold for further operations.
Meanwhile, senior officials in the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden told Bloomberg News that Ukrainian forces should be able to hold onto the occupied territories in the Kursk region for many more months. This should be possible due to continuous supply deliveries and Moscow's focus on the eastern part of Ukraine.
Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region
On August 6, powerful Ukrainian mechanized forces broke through Russian defenses along the Ukrainian-Russian border and, moving quickly while bypassing Russian fortifications, easily captured 400 square miles of territory in the Kursk region.
At the end of August, the Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrsky, reported that Ukrainian forces control 500 square miles of territory in the Kursk region and about 100 localities in this part of Russia.
