At the Engels air base, movements suggesting an impending attack on Ukraine have been detected. The apron now accommodates five extra aircraft, specifically Tu-160 and Tu-95MS bombers. As of February 28, 2024, the air base in the Saratov region is home to five Tu-95MS, four Tu-22M, and three Tu-160 bombers.

Expansion of Russian aircraft fleet at Engels air base

The Engels air base stands out as the singular stronghold for Tu-160 bombers within Russia, a fact that drew Ukrainian drone attacks at the outset of January 2024. Located approximately 311 miles from the Ukrainian border, this facility houses the so-called White Swans, produced since 1987. These aircraft are propelled by four NK-32 turbofans, achieving up to 1,367 velocities with a cruising speed of 528 mph.

The Tu-160 can reach altitudes up to 51,181 feet, with a maximum range surpassing 7,456 miles. This bomber model is designed to carry either 12 Kh-55 missiles or 24 Kh-15 missiles within its two bomb bays, each measuring 36.7x6.2 ft.

Also stationed at the Engels air base is the Tu-95MS, slightly outpaced in range by the "White Swan," which is able to cover roughly 6,214 miles. This aircraft can reach speeds up to 515 mph and is equipped to carry 15 tons of bombs and guided missiles, including the Kh-101 or Kh-65 cruise missiles.

Furthermore, four Tu-22M bombers are present at the facility. These aircraft date back to the 1960s, marking the commencement of Tupolev's development efforts. Characterized by a duralumin frame and variable geometry wings (ranging from 20 to 65 degrees), they are propelled by two NK-25 jet engines, allowing them to exceed speeds of 1,243 mph.

Operating at altitudes of up to 59,055 feet, the Tu-22M boasts a range of 4,350 miles on a single fueling. The bomber's primary armament includes a GSz-23 cannon in the tail section, but it is predominantly configured to transport missiles and bombs weighing as much as 24 tons. The armament can be loaded in the bomb bay and on four external points, capable of holding Kh-22 or Kh-15 missiles, among other munitions.
