Russia bars Japan's foreign minister amid sanction clash

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a travel ban for Japan's Foreign Minister, Takeshi Iwaya. This move is Moscow's retaliation in response to Tokyo's sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The ban also extends to a group of eight other Japanese officials, as stated by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Consequences for relations

Among those affected by the ban are the current and former Japanese ambassadors to Ukraine. Previously, Russia had imposed indefinite travel bans on various Japanese officials and entrepreneurs as part of its broader policy to counter international sanctions.

Russia's decision further contributes to the deterioration of relations between Moscow and Tokyo.
