Russell Crowe continues to prove his versatility across various film genres, showing a particular zeal for horror films of late. Last year, he starred in "The Pope's Exorcist" as Father Gabriel Amorth. It seems he's set to wear the cassock again in the upcoming film "The Exorcism."

"The Exorcism": Unveiling Russell Crowe’s latest cinematic venture

In "The Exorcism," Russell Crowe embodies Anthony Miller, an actor grappling with mental health struggles exacerbated by his role in a horror movie about supernatural occurrences. His estranged daughter, Lee (portrayed by Ryan Simpkins), suspects her father might succumb to his old demons—or perhaps face new, more literal ones. As the story unfolds, she becomes convinced that evil forces are at play.

A personal horror story: Director Joshua John Miller’s inspiration

Directed by Joshua John Miller, known for "Near Dark" and "Halloween 3: Season of the Witch," "The Exorcism" draws from Miller’s childhood experiences. Horror cinema has been a lifelong companion for Miller, whose father, Jason Miller, famously starred in "The Exorcist."

Miller recalls that this film was born in his mind thanks to his childhood spent watching his father, Jason Miller, play the tragic Father Karras, culminating in his dramatic leap from a window in 'The Exorcist.'

The supposed curse of "The Exorcist," marked by mysterious fires, strange deaths, and injuries, left a lasting impression on him, igniting a fascination with the lore of "cursed movies."

Miller adds that in 'The Exorcism,' they aimed to refresh the classic narrative of exorcism films, challenging the trope where a heroic man rescues a helpless woman from evil. The film depicts a world where virtues of goodness and decency are not exclusive to any group, showcasing that darkness can consume anyone who doesn't confront their inner demons. The director credits the cast and creative team for bringing this nuanced story to life.

The premiere of "The Exorcism" is set on June 7th, 2024.
