  • President Donald Trump may change his approach to the conflict.
  • The US plans to hold talks with China regarding trade.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on Fox News that a breakthrough in talks concerning Ukraine must happen quickly. Otherwise, President Donald Trump will have to decide how much longer to devote attention to this issue.

I think we know where Ukraine is, and we know where Russia is right now…. They're closer, but they're still far apart, added the Secretary of State, as quoted by the RFE/RL.

Rubio indicated that a lack of quick progress in the talks might prompt President Trump to change his stance on the Ukrainian conflict. Trump's decisions could affect the further involvement of the US in this matter. It is noteworthy that the President also announced personnel changes in the administration, appointing Rubio as acting National Security Advisor. Rubio will replace Mike Waltz, who will take on the role of US Ambassador to the United Nations.

Talks with China

In the same program, Rubio addressed the issue of trade with China. "Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is involved in those efforts, and their talks will come up soon," the head of American diplomacy emphasized, as quoted by NHK.

On Thursday, Reuters, citing a source related to Chinese state media, reported that the US has asked the Chinese side for talks concerning the imposition of 145% tariffs introduced by Donald Trump. Rubio highlighted that in this context, the question arises about the future scale of US purchases from China.
