Rubio and Lavrov join forces for urgent Ukraine peace talks
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed to establish teams to work towards a swift end to the war in Ukraine. Europe will also have a place at the negotiation table.
Tuesday's talks between the Russian and American delegations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, lasted over four hours and were the first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
At a press conference following the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Donald Trump is the only leader in the world who can initiate the negotiation process and bring an end to the conflict.
“Rubio says ending Russia's war in Ukraine will require concessions from all sides and that Europe will be part of talks,” reports AP. He suggested that it may be necessary to lift sanctions against Russia and highlighted the importance of the European Union having a role at the negotiation table.
He stated that the European Union must have a seat at the negotiation table because they have also implemented their sanctions.
