Rome's iconic fountains to dazzle as renovations conclude
In recent months, Rome hasn't been the best destination for visitors due to construction and renovation projects tied to preparations for the upcoming jubilee. Fortunately, the end of these renovations is in sight, and the most popular fountains will soon be fully accessible.
With over 30 million pilgrims and tourists expected from around the world for the Jubilee Year of 2025, the Eternal City is busily preparing for these special events. Intense renovation and restoration efforts are underway at numerous sites.
Monuments will regain their splendor
Just before the inauguration in Rome, the famous fountains were being renovated to restore their former glory. Tourists should be pleased, as the renovation of the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona has already been completed.
The Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, attended the ceremonial unveiling. He noted that Pope Innocent X wanted the fountain ready for the Holy Year in 1650, but it was completed a year later.
The recently completed renovation of the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona is one of the most significant projects. Gianlorenzo Bernini's mid-17th-century masterpiece represents four great rivers from four continents: the Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Rio de la Plata. After seven months of work involving thorough chemical and mechanical cleaning, the fountain has regained its original appearance.
What about the Trevi Fountain?
The work on the Trevi Fountain is also nearing completion. One of Rome's most recognizable attractions is now almost fully open to visitors. The scaffolding and metal walkway, present since early November, have been removed. Only low barriers remain around the monument.
In recent months, both fountains were inaccessible to visitors, leading to disappointment for many tourists. However, city authorities are making every effort to ensure that the Eternal City continues to captivate millions of visitors with its beauty and cultural heritage.
