The Romanian Constitutional Court determined on Thursday that a recount was necessary for the votes cast in the first round of the presidential elections, which occurred on Sunday.

According to PAP, the decision came after considering requests from Cristian Terhes, who sought to annul the elections. The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) has been directed to recount the votes and present its findings to the Constitutional Court. The hearing is scheduled for Friday, November 29th, at 2 PM Eastern Time.

Even though a recount was ordered, the Constitutional Court dismissed the request by Sebastian-Constantin Popescu to annul the elections. Notably, Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate with far-right views, received the most votes in the first round. He was previously a relatively unknown politician to many. Elena Lasconi, chairwoman of the center-right Save Romania Union (USR), came in second place.

The second round of the presidential elections in Romania will occur on December 8th. We will see if the recount influences the election results and affects preparations for future contests. According to PAP, the situation in Romania is being closely monitored both internally and internationally.
