Road to power: Inside Trump's 'Beast' presidential limo
Donald Trump has once again assumed the office of the President of the United States, replacing Joe Biden. On this occasion, we take a closer look at the famous "Beast," which not only impresses with its construction but also with its security and protection features.
Technical specification and protection
The presidential limousine, known as the "Beast," is a symbol of American security on wheels. Although, at first glance, it resembles a traditional Cadillac, its construction is actually based on the technology used in trucks. It is a rolling fortress capable of withstanding all types of attacks.
The construction of the "Beast" is based on the frame of a light truck—the Chevrolet Kodiak C4500—which explains its impressive weight of between 8 and 10 U.S. tons. Armors made from aluminum, ceramics, and steel provide the highest level of protection, as do additional reinforcements in the doors and windows, which are up to 5 inches thick. It's also worth mentioning the special tires, which allow for continued driving even after being punctured.
Equipment for every occasion
The limousine carries advanced technologies for both protection and first aid. The interior of the "Beast" is airtight, and the vehicle is equipped with systems to defend against gas attacks. It also has a first aid kit, including a refrigerator containing blood compatible with the blood type of the President of the United States. Devices such as a gas dispenser and night vision goggles protect against potential threats.
The vehicle is also equipped with handles that emit electric shocks and a smoke grenade launcher, emphasizing its function as a mobile fortress. These systems are impressive and command respect, highlighting the unique character of the presidential limousine.
Huge engine with surprisingly low power
The "Beast" is powered by a 6.6-liter V8 Duramax Diesel engine generating about 300 HP. That's relatively modest. The maximum torque, however, is more impressive, at 516 lb-ft. Nevertheless, the presidential limousine is not a rocket. Even though the full technical details are classified, the maximum speed is estimated to be only 62 mph, and fuel consumption exceeds 7.8 gallons of diesel per 62 miles.
Over the years, presidential limousines have evolved. From luxurious, albeit quite standard cars, they have gradually transformed into rolling fortresses. The current "Beast" is basically indestructible. The present generation dates back to 2018—it was ordered by the Trump administration at the time. The entire project cost about $16 million, reflecting the significance of this investment in the context of protecting the leader of the United States.
Work has already begun on a new generation, which will replace the current model, to maintain the highest standards of safety and modernity. It is increasingly speculated that the future "Beast" will be emission-free, but is that certain? Time will tell.
Trump only as a passenger
One thing is certain—Donald Trump will never sit behind the wheel of the current or future "Beast." The reason is a ban, or rather a recommendation, stipulating that the President of the United States cannot drive on public roads. Interestingly, this also applies after leaving office.
