Zaporizhzhia, one of Ukraine's three main industrial centers, is crucial for the country's economy and functioning. Before Russia's invasion, more than 700,000 people lived in Zaporizhzhia.

It is unclear when the attack on Zaporizhzhia, located 19 miles from the front line, might occur. The main city of the Zaporizhzhia region remains partially under Russian occupation, reports "The Economist."

In preparation for a possible Russian offensive, Ukrainians are strengthening the defense around the city. Fortifications, new minefields, and concrete and iron constructions are being built.

At the end of 2022, Vladimir Putin announced annexing the entire Zaporizhzhia region. His forces controlled one-third of this region.
