Ridley Scott shared his long-term plans in an interview with French media, revealing some details about the second part, which will be released soon.
"I'm already toying with the idea of 'Gladiator 3. ' No, seriously! I've lit the fuse. The ending of 'Gladiator II' is reminiscent of 'The Godfather,' with Michael Corleone finding himself with a job he didn't want, and wondering, 'Now, Father, what do I do? So the next [film] will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is," Scott said.
Meanwhile, Variety urges caution and reminds us that the fate of any franchise depends on the success of the latest installment. How will it be this time? The director himself, which is no surprise, is thrilled with what he has created. He calls "Gladiator II" "the best thing he's ever made."
The trailer amazes viewers who are eager for the special effects, which were not as advanced years ago as they are today. The buzz around the title is also fueled by the stars themselves.
"Gladiator II"
The action of the new movie takes place 24 years (a clever move!) after the events of the first "Gladiator." This time, Lucius Verus comes to the forefront. Paul Mescal takes on this role and becomes the titular gladiator, following in the footsteps of Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius is the Roman Empire's heir but has been living in seclusion for years. Eventually, he must appear in the empire's capital to confront his heritage. The film also stars Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, and Joseph Quinn. American viewers will see "Gladiator II" on November 22.
