Butter can arguably be found in every kitchen. We smear it on sandwiches, cook with it, and incorporate it into our baked goods. This last task can be significantly simplified by using an innovative trick for storing the dairy cube. The concept is straightforward, but it significantly improves kitchen functionality. All you will need is a knife and a piece of baking paper.

What is the best method to store butter?

A unique tip for storing butter has recently emerged on the Instagram profile @wygodnie_z_basia. You can apply it every time you purchase new butter. Simply unwrap it and divide it into smaller portions. For instance, if you buy a block weighing 200g (approximately 7 ounces), you could cut it into four pieces of 50g (approximately 2 ounces) each, five pieces of 40g (approximately 1.5 ounces each), and so on. Remember to either memorize or note down the weight of each block.

To make the task easier, before you start cutting the butter, prepare some baking paper divided into small squares (divide one sheet into six or even eight parts). Then, place a piece of paper on the sharp side of the knife and insert the whole structure into the butter. In this fashion, make all your planned cuts. Afterward, use the folded pieces of paper between the butter pieces to wrap each individually. Finally, place all the wrapped butter portions into an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator.

Why should you separate butter into portions?

You might be wondering the reason for this unusual practice. The rationale is quite simple! Doing this will save you significant time and prevent the waste of butter. This method permits you to freeze the product. Should you require some butter for a recipe, you merely take out only the quantity you need, hence ensuring nothing goes to waste! The portioned butter stored in the refrigerator facilitates cooking — having these preset equal portions means you no longer need to measure the correct quantity while preparing the dough. The result is instant access to your required amount, hassle-free, and without any mess.

How can you store butter so that it’s doesn't harden or go rancid?

Storing butter while maintaining its freshness and softness can be challenging, or so most consumers believe. However, this isn't the truth at all! A simple trick prevents the butter from hardening in the refrigerator and simultaneously prevents it from turning rancid. All that's needed is to store it in salt water. This method of preserving butter is a time-honored grandmother's side tale.

Of course, continuously pouring water into and out of the butter dish each time a sandwich is made can be somewhat taxing. That's why investing in a smart butter dish can be worthwhile. It is designed to enable the water to fall when the lid is opened and then to rise and cover the butter when the container is closed.
