Silver spoons, knives, and forks are very popular. In some families, elegant sets are passed down from generation to generation. Over time, these pieces may lose their shine, and their surfaces can darken from contact with various products. But worry not; a simple method can effectively clean even the most stubborn impurities.
DIY technique for cleaning cutlery
If your silver set has become darker and you want it to look new again, you can use some inexpensive products typically found in every kitchen. We're talking about baking soda and vinegar.
All you need to do is pour about 1 gallon of water into a bowl (enough to completely cover the cutlery), add four tablespoons of baking soda and five tablespoons of vinegar, then stir the mixture. Once the mixture is ready, you have to put the thoroughly washed cutlery in it and leave it for about 30 minutes.
After removing the cutlery from the bath, ensure it's thoroughly dried and polished with a soft rag. A microfiber cloth or an old cotton shirt will do the job perfectly.
What to avoid when cleaning silver cutlery
To prevent scratching your valuable silverware, it's best not to wash it in the dishwasher. You should also avoid using abrasive sponges or cleaners that contain granules, including toothpaste.
Try to keep your silverware away from light, moisture, and even air. This is why elegant sets are best kept in sealed containers, often within specially designed cases that make popular wedding gifts. Ordinary drawers, where silverware can get mixed with everyday spoons, knives, and forks, can lead to scratches. Before you place silver cutlery into a sealed container, it should be thoroughly washed and polished.
