Revive your old mop with this simple kitchen hack and save money on cleaning supplies

An old mop in the bathroom can be a genuine inconvenience. It's dirty odorous, often leaving plenty of streaks on the floor after cleaning. This might make you wonder whether it's more of a nuisance than a help in your daily cleaning. But before you dispose of it, try a simple hack with baking soda and table salt. This trick will not only make your old mop more efficient and less repulsive, but it will also save you some money on new equipment.

Regular Care for mop cleaning

Cleaning the floor with a dirty, old mop can be counterproductive. The fabric that comes into contact with the surface is often teeming with bacteria, dirt, and other pollutants that are inadvertently spread all over the house. Although most of us would not enjoy dealing with such a "dirt-bag", it's crucial to realize that inadequate mop care typically leads to such an undesired situation.

The worst thing you can do is store a wet mop in a bucket. Doing so creates a conducive environment for bacterial growth. Eventually, a musty smell might prompt you to buy a new mop, even though the old one could be rejuvenated. With a simple mixture of two kitchen products applied after each use, your mop can be as good as new in just five minutes!

How to effectively clean a dirty mop?

For optimal mop maintenance, it's advisable not to let it reach a state of extreme filth, which could significantly complicate the cleaning process. Mops with replaceable heads are an excellent choice since the heads are easily removable and can be hand-washed using water and a floor-cleaning liquid. While machine washing is an option some people might consider, it's not the best approach since these fibers can deteriorate quickly.

The simplest and most cost-effective way to disinfect and care for a mop involves salt and soda. Prepare this solution in a 1:1 ratio and sprinkle it on the damp mop. By leaving this mixture on for five minutes, the active ingredients will have a chance to work effectively. Baking soda is an antibacterial agent, eliminating unpleasant odors, while salt disinfects and removes grime. It is recommended to use this cleaning method after each use, ensuring that your mop remains well disinfected and ready for further use without further spreading dirt or bacteria around your home.
