Revive stale bread into a savory delight. Egg bread with smoked paprika and cheese

When the refrigerator resembles a barren wasteland, and hunger begins to set in, the classic egg bread comes to the rescue. This recipe aligns well with the famous "reduce waste" trend, as even slightly stale bread can work wonders here. Egg bread is a delightful breakfast, a warming dinner, or a quick snack when hunger strikes.

Egg Bread

While it may seem like a Polish delicacy, egg bread is also well-received abroad, and in Poland, it's often referred to as French toast. This dish is typically served sweetly and adorned with fruits, honey, maple syrup, or jam. As much as it tastes wonderful in this form, at my home, savory egg bread is indisputably the favorite. I enhance the traditional recipe with smoked paprika, introducing a delicious, slightly smoky aroma. I also incorporate cheddar cheese into the recipe. It's a hit with the kids, ensuring no single slice of bread goes to waste.

Ingredients:

  • a few slices of bread,
  • 4 eggs,
  • 3/8 cups of milk,
  • smoked paprika,
  • salt and pepper,
  • grated cheese,
  • oil for frying.

Preparation:

  1. Pour milk into a bowl along with the eggs and scramble them using a fork. Add in the salt, pepper, and smoked paprika, and mix well.
  2. Heat up oil or clarified butter in a pan.
  3. Dip each bread slice on both sides in the egg mixture and transfer them to the heated pan.
  4. Fry them for a bit, then flip each slice and sprinkle with grated cheese. Cover the pan and continue frying until the egg is fully cooked and the cheese has melted.
  5. Transfer the ready egg bread onto plates for serving.

The whole dish can be garnished with chopped chives. While it's delicious, kids will likely opt for a dash of ketchup. The tantalizingly stretchy cheese, slightly crisp bread, and a total preparation time of just a few moments are the highlights of this recipe. Enjoy!
