Water rolls: a timeless recipe for a tasty traditional bread

They're delicious, light, crispy, and have a habit of resurrecting childhood memories. Fortunately, they're also easy to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 1.1 lb all-purpose flour,
  • 1.27 cups of lukewarm water,
  • 0.35 oz each of salt and sugar (approx. 2 teaspoons each),
  • 0.24 oz of dry yeast.

Preparation:

  1. Sift the flour into a bowl, add sugar and salt, then mix thoroughly.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water and wait until it starts to work and foam up.
  3. Add the yeast solution into the bowl containing the flour and other ingredients.
  4. Begin to mix the dough with a wooden spoon, then knead it manually for about 15 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  5. Set the dough aside to rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours. It should double in volume.
  6. Check the dough's readiness by performing the 'fingertip test.' The dough should slowly return to its original shape when pressed.
  7. Split the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and shape them into round rolls.
  8. Place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper, with approximately a 2-inch space between each roll.
  9. Cover the rolls with a clean cloth and set aside to rise for half an hour.
  10. Preheat the oven to 392-428 degrees Fahrenheit.
  11. Bake the rolls for about 15-20 minutes, until they take on a golden-brown hue.

Alternative: Steamed water rolls

If you fancy a different approach, water rolls can be prepared as steamed buns too. Ideal for aficionados of tender dumplings, these steamed varieties can serve as an appealing alternative to traditional baked goods. All that's needed is placing a special steaming dish or a metal colander with holes over a pot. Then, you can relish the scent and flavor of homemade rolls in this steamed variant.
