Discover the Japanese version of the poppy seed cake
I realize that the name of today's pastry might not immediately resonate with you, but give me a few minutes, and it will all become clear. I will explain in a simplistic, yet quick manner how to whip up the best poppy seed cake you've ever had.
Not only does it conceal fruit delicacies, which enhance the final outcome of the entire pastry, but these fruits also make the homemade cake superbly moist. The poppy seed cake in this version literally melts in your mouth – thanks to none other than apples.
Step-by-step guide to making Japanese poppy seed cake
Ingredients:
- 1 lb of dry ground poppy seeds
- 3 tablespoons of flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter
- 4.2 cups of milk
- 1.1 lb of apples
- 2.1 cups of powdered sugar
- 7 eggs
- ⅓ cup of semolina
- ¼ cup of honey
- 11 oz of your preferred dried fruits (you can mix prunes and raisins, for example)
- Chocolate coating for decoration.
Method of preparation:
- Initiate the recipe by preparing the poppy seeds. Combine them in a pot on the stove with the milk. Cook the mixture until the poppy seeds absorb all the milk.
- Next, break the eggs, separating the yolks from the whites. Sift the flour through a sieve to further aerate it, then combine it with the baking powder.
- Cut the soft butter into smaller pieces, then start creaming it with the powdered sugar.
- Gradually add one yolk at a time to the mix. Now it's time for the poppy seed mass and the flour-baking powder combination, and the semolina, all in small portions.
- In the meantime, grate the apples and start incorporating them into the mixture.
- Eventually, add honey and the dried fruits, cut into small pieces, to the mix.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites, then fold them into the previously prepared mixture.
- Pour the dough into a mold and bake for 60 minutes at a temperature of 356 degrees Fahrenheit.
- While the cake bakes, prepare the chocolate coating. After baking and cooling the cake, spread it on top of the cake. Decorate as desired and enjoy!
