It appears that one of the most common mistakes made when doing laundry is improper sorting. But that's not all, the list of potential errors is quite long. It is crucial to be aware of them as these mistakes can result in drastically increased water and electricity bills.

A myriad of errors can occur while laundering. Regrettably, many of these are unknown to most of us. These oversights can lead to significantly higher water and energy bills.

Common mistakes made while doing laundry that can inflate your bills

The "Daily Star" decided to investigate the most common faux pas related to laundry. Surprisingly, the careless segregation of clothes is not the only mistake we make. Niki English, senior director of design and business development at AJG Fashion Consulting, also pointed out the problem of overloading the washer. "Overloading results in ineffective laundering necessitates additional wash cycles and consumes more energy," she explained in the "Daily Star". So, it's advisable to avoid stuffing excess clothes into the washer.

Another common error is neglecting the information on the garment labels. Each label contains specific care instructions for every piece of clothing. Ignoring this information could not only damage the clothes but also waste energy. Some people always wash their clothes at the highest temperature. This is a mistake. Washing clothes in cooler water is more energy-efficient and helps maintain the fabric's color while preventing shrinkage.

The biggest laundry mistake

Niki English emphasizes that people often overlook the importance of using the correct amount of detergent. An excessive amount won't make your clothes cleaner, instead, it will leave a residue that makes the fabric dull, necessitating another wash. This leads to a wastage of both water and energy.

Another mistake is laundering clothes too frequently, for instance, after a single use. This habit considerably contributes to the wear and tear of the fabric, while also emptying our wallets. Instead, it's more advisable to air out the clothing or spot clean it, if washing is not necessary.
