Racist auction incident at Cape Town school sparks outrage

White students from a high school in South Africa humiliated their black peers in a racist manner. They locked the black students in cages and pretended to auction them as slaves. The entire incident was filmed and posted on social media.

The incident occurred in Cape Town and was exposed by the mother of one of the affected students.

"They were picking up black boys and putting them in the cage. It’s not like they went willingly." They started bidding, with prices starting at 100,000 rand (about $5,400). Those 'sold' were dragged out of the cage and forced to stand by their 'owner,' the mother described in an interview with eNCA.

The humiliated students received psychological counseling. The students responsible for orchestrating this event may face suspension. Teacher unions and the parents of the victims are demanding disciplinary action.

Racist incidents in South Africa

A similar race-based incident occurred last week at a prestigious girls' school in Pretoria, South Africa. Black students accused their white classmates of creating a group on a popular messenger app where racist comments about them were posted.

According to a survey conducted by UNICEF, about 68 percent of young people in South Africa stated that discrimination due to skin color is an inherent part of their lives. They encounter it both at school and work.
