Quake rattles Morocco, shakes across Iberian peninsula

Late Monday evening in northern Morocco, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded. Tremors were also felt in southern Portugal and Spain.

The earthquake impacted the Tanger-Tetuan region in Morocco. The epicenter was 6 miles underground, 16 miles northeast of Al-Kasr al-Kabir. Currently, there is no information about casualties or significant material damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 5:48 PM Eastern Time. Residents of cities such as Faro, Albufeira, Loule, Huelva, and Cadiz felt the tremors, which were situated on the Iberian Peninsula. The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) estimated the strength of the tremors at 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were strong enough for the residents of southern Portugal and Spain to feel distinct, yet even in this region, they did not cause any significant damage. There are no injuries or casualties reported.

On the Richter scale, an earthquake with a magnitude between 4.9 and 5.4 is felt by everyone but causes very minimal damage.
