Putin’s safety concerns grow: Bulletproof vest now essential
Independent Russian news service Moscow Times reports that Russian services fear for Putin's life. They have recommended that he wear a bulletproof vest. "That precaution, I think, is necessary" a Kremlin official told the service.
"This year on May 9, the chief [Putin] was clearly wearing concealed body armor during the parade. And that precaution, I think, is necessary," the Kremlin official reiterated.
Moscow Times notes that some people believe Putin may have started using bulletproof vests during his public appearances last year.
Asked for her opinion, British security consultant Jade Miller confirmed the portal's observations based on footage from the Moscow Victory Parade. In the footage, Putin could be seen moving stiffly. "Putin appears to be walking in a rather rigid manner and there are no natural creases appearing at the back of his overcoat when walking and shaking military personnel hands," she said.
"Putin always fulfills security demands"
Moscow Times pointed out that during this event, security measures are extremely stringent: access to Red Square is closed two weeks before May 9, and guests undergo meticulous personal checks. Moreover, Putin, who laid wreaths, was surrounded on all sides by about 20 bodyguards, and dozens of snipers were positioned on the rooftops of neighboring buildings.
Andrei Soldatov, an expert specializing in Russian services' activities, told the portal that Putin usually agrees to raise the level of security if advised by his protection.
"Putin is a rather unique leader in that he usually agrees to increased security/expansion of the security perimeter when his guards ask for it," he said.
