Authorities plan to establish a district named after Vladimir Putin in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. The proposed 'Putin district' will be formed by reassigning part of the currently existing Sheikh Mansur district, named after the Chechen religious leader and organizer of resistance against Tsarist Russia.

At the start of the month, Grozny City Hall conducted a vote among residents regarding the creation of the 'Putin district.' Of those voting, 34,705 supported the initiative, with only around 200 suggesting alternative options. The city Duma has accepted these results as legitimate, TASS reported, and preparations for a resolution on the new district are underway. This district aims to honor the contributions of Vladimir Putin by renaming a portion of the Sheikh Mansur district, commemorating the leader of the Chechen resistance against Russia in the late 18th century.

Tribute to the Russian leader

This initiative follows a 2008 act where Grozny's main thoroughfare, Victory Avenue, was renamed Vladimir Putin Avenue. Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, justified the rename with Putin's exceptional contributions to battling terrorism and revitalizing Chechnya's economy and social infrastructure.
