Putin refuses compromise despite Trump's push for peace talks

Analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) are convinced that "Putin is not interested in any compromises during future peace talks." They presented evidence in their latest report.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he spoke on the phone with Vladimir Putin and then with Volodymyr Zelensky about ending the war in Ukraine. "We agreed that our teams will immediately start negotiations," stated Trump.

Earlier, Zelensky declared that he intends to exchange part of the Kursk region, controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. This proposal is to be presented at the anticipated peace talks.

According to analysts from the American think tank, striking a deal between Russia and Ukraine is unrealistic, and no compromise is within reach.

Russian officials have clearly defined the "root causes" of the war as the alleged violation by NATO of commitments not to undertake actions eastward in areas near the Russian border. This indicates that the Kremlin remains determined to impose its will and interests on the United States and Europe, and is not interested in compromising on this issue, suggest ISW analysts.

Dmitry Medvedev stated that the exchange of Russian and Ukrainian territory would be "nonsense," and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia "will never discuss" exchanging its territory.

"Statements by Medvedev and Peskov further confirm ISW's assessment that Vladimir Putin is not interested in reaching any compromises during future peace negotiations and will only agree to a settlement that meets all his demands regarding Ukraine," reads the latest American report.
