Sunscreen is often associated with sun and vacations, making it an essential item in every cosmetic bag during these times. It's no secret that solar radiation accelerates aging processes and can even be carcinogenic to the skin. But is it necessary to use it in the fall and winter?

Sunscreen is essential all year round

Fall is typically when we put aside sunscreen, thinking that since there's no strong sun or its rays are gentle, there's no need for it. However, this is a misconception. Even though the sun isn't as harsh as in the summer, ultraviolet radiation still affects us. UV rays are present even on cloudy days or indoors, where we are exposed to screens. Therefore, a broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB radiation.

It's not just a matter of health but also aesthetics; discontinuing its use can lead to deterioration in skin structure. This is why sunscreen is vital in anti-wrinkle and anti-aging treatments. Sunlight accelerates the breakdown of proteins like elastin and collagen, leading to the appearance of the first wrinkles. Additionally, sun exposure can cause skin cancer, discoloration, allergies, and dryness. The skin on the face is more demanding as it is more delicate and thinner than the rest of the body. Therefore, SPF 50 or SPF 30 sunscreen is a must-have.

How to use sunscreen

Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen year-round as part of your daily skincare routine, especially when planning to leave the house. It also works well as a base for makeup. When applying it to your face, make sure it is evenly distributed. Instead of rubbing, pat it in to avoid irritation and enhance effectiveness. Apply about half a teaspoon of the product to the entire face for reliable protection. During the day, it's wise to reapply to prolong its effectiveness. If you're wearing makeup, an SPF mist is a good option for reapplication.

In the fall and winter, choosing a cream with moisturizing and regenerating properties is beneficial and will act as a protective barrier against dry skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or ectoine will be helpful in this regard.
