Private firefighting sparks controversy amid LA fire crisis

The fires in California, which have been going on since the middle of the week, are also being addressed by private firefighting units, which operate on behalf of clients with extended insurance policies to protect their homes from destruction.

The fires in the Los Angeles area, California, have drawn the attention of public emergency services and private firefighters, whose services are primarily available to wealthy clients.

One company offering such services is Wildfire Defense Systems, owned by David Torgerson. This company has its own water supply and specialized equipment, such as fire-retardant gel and hoses. Torgerson claims its actions are socially beneficial because they help preserve homes and prevent large insurance payouts.

The presence of private fire departments is controversial, as it highlights economic disparities in society. As noted by CNN, most private firefighters operate on government contracts, but there are also companies serving wealthy individual clients. According to CNN, more than 200 companies provide these services, with insurance companies being the second-largest group of clients after local authorities.

The situation underscores that when the neighborhoods of stars and celebrities started burning, some residents turned to social media to contact private firefighting companies. One person declared, "I'll pay any amount," prompting criticism as evidence of insensitivity and "extreme audacity."

Anthony Marrone, the fire chief of Los Angeles County, expressed gratitude for the support of national and international teams. Additional air and ground teams were deployed, contributing to greater efficiency in firefighting efforts. Despite this progress, the threat remains high due to forecasted unfavorable weather conditions.

Although there has been an improvement in weather conditions, another high-fire risk warning has been issued. Losses are estimated at over $50 billion.
