If you neglect to clean your washing machine regularly, mold will eventually appear. You may not notice it initially because it often develops in hard-to-reach places like the drum seal. However, when you start to smell a musty odor, it's a sign that the problem has already developed. Instead of hoping for a miracle, immediately act as soon as you see mold. Here's what you can do to effectively remedy this.

Using a washing machine with mold is harmful to your health. When you notice black spots anywhere on the washing machine or smell a musty odor coming from the drum, act promptly. Several simple home remedies can help you get rid of the mold.

Where does mold in the washing machine come from?

For example, mold in the washing machine under the seal usually occurs due to a lack of proper maintenance. Many people mistakenly believe that since the washing machine cleans clothes (just like a dishwasher cleans dishes), it doesn't require cleaning. Unfortunately, this approach promotes the growth of bacteria and mold.

Remember that various impurities end up in the washing machine, such as mud, food residues, sweat. During washing, these impurities are rinsed from the fabrics but do not disappear magically – they end up in the hoses and further into the sewer. On the way, some bacteria settle on the parts of the washing machine. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold formation.

What is the way to deal with mold in the washing machine?

The seal is one place in the washing machine where mold can appear. After washing, water residues mixed with detergents and dirt from clothes accumulate there. If you do not dry it after each use or clean it regularly, mold and a musty smell will quickly develop.

To eliminate these problems, use strong cleaning agents. Soak a paper towel with bleach and place it under the seal, leaving it there for a few hours. Afterward, remove the towel and wipe the rubber with a clean cloth. After cleaning, open the washing machine door to allow the seal to dry.

How to take care of the washing machine?

The principle of prevention rather than cure also applies to the washing machine. To avoid mold problems, take care of your washing machine daily. After each wash, leave the door open to let the inside of the device dry. You can also wipe the seal with a dry cloth.

Regularly clean all parts of the washing machine—the drum, detergent drawer, and filter. You can use store-bought chemicals or tried-and-tested home methods for this. Vinegar is excellent for cleaning the drawer and filter, while dishwasher tablets are suitable for cleaning the drum. Regularly using these methods will ensure that mold never takes hold in your washing machine again. This way, you will maintain hygiene and extend the life of the device.
