Not only does the potato effectively remove rust, but it also gently cleans surfaces without causing scratches. This simple trick can restore your baking sheets and pans to their former shine without using harsh chemicals or aggressive tools.

Why is a potato effective in cleaning rust?

Potatoes contain oxalic acid, which, when combined with salt, acts as a natural cleaning agent. This combination effectively dissolves rust, making it easier to remove dirt from the metal surface. Using a potato to clean baking sheets and other metal dishes is not only an eco-friendly solution but also a simple way to extend their lifespan. Scouring pads often damage protective coatings, leading to corrosion over time. A potato cleans gently yet effectively. Cleaning rust with potato is a method known for years, used by our grandmothers, who managed everyday dirt naturally without resorting to harsh chemical agents.

How to clean sheets with a potato

Preparing for cleaning is simple. You only need a potato, salt, and a bit of patience. Cut the potato in half and generously sprinkle salt on the cut side. Then, rub it on the rusty areas of the sheet in circular motions. The potato's acid, combined with the salt, will start to dissolve the rust, making the surface increasingly clean.

What will you need?

  • 1 large potato
  • Salt
  • A baking sheet to clean

The potato is a simple, cheap, and effective way to remove rust and dirt from baking sheets and other metal dishes. Thanks to this method, you can avoid using scouring pads that might damage the surfaces of your cookware, as well as steer clear of chemical cleaning agents that can be harmful to your health and the environment. The potato works gently yet surprisingly effectively, leaving surfaces shiny and clean.

  1. Start by cutting the potato in half and sprinkling salt on the cut side, then begin rubbing the rusty sheet.
  2. The combination of potato and salt should effectively remove rust. If the potato becomes worn down, slice off a thin layer and continue the process.

After cleaning the sheet, rinse it with water and dry it thoroughly to prevent rust from forming again.
