Positano's picture-perfect beach: Instagram vs. reality
It has been one of the most popular beaches in the world for years. Photos taken here are almost guaranteed to garner thousands of likes. We recently visited to see how the famous beach in this Italian town truly looks.
One of Instagram's trendiest beaches is in Positano, on the Amalfi Coast in Italy's Campania region.
Amalfi Coast
You can reach Positano from Naples by taking a train to Sorrento and then a bus. The Costiera Amalfitana, a stretch of coastline on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque parts of Italy, attracting crowds of tourists all year round.
This UNESCO World Heritage-listed region extends along the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east. The coast boasts a Mediterranean climate, featuring warm summers and mild winters.
The mountainous terrain offers breathtaking views, with colorful houses built in tiers on steep slopes, appearing almost glued to the rocky cliffs. The scene is truly picturesque.
Magical Positano
Although the region consists of 13 towns, Positano is the true showcase of the Costiera Amalfitana. It captivates visitors even from the bus window, and in person, it feels like a scene from a fairy tale.
However, many might be surprised by the numerous stairs and uphill walks. Good physical fitness is essential in this town. It's best to get off the bus at the first stop and walk toward the beach. The setting is truly magical—surrounded by hills dotted with colorful houses.
For those who have only seen it on Instagram, the dark sand with many stones and crowds on the beach year-round might be a surprise. Many people visit just to take a photo. With the right angle, you can make the beach appear empty or simply visit in the evening for a quieter experience.
