Porsche power meets T4: The van that outruns your car
Installing an engine from a Porsche 911 into a rear-engine T3 has become somewhat passé. However, integrating such a setup into a T4 is a different ball game. Indeed, someone has accomplished this feat.
That someone is Rüdiger Claer, renowned for his enhancements to the T3 models. Yet, as times changed, so did his projects. Reports from 2002 indicate that the T4 was outfitted with a Porsche 993 Turbo engine, and efforts were already in place to upgrade to a liquid-cooled engine from the 996.
This wasn’t just any standard engine, though. Upgraded from its original 408 hp, it now boasts 522 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Claer doesn’t handle the tuning himself but entrusts it to the most distinguished Porsche experts: RUF. Under the hood, you would only find the batteries and a fuel tank, as all-wheel drive is standard.
Interestingly, this transformation adds only about 66 pounds more to the rear axle (a carry-over from the T3) than the front. The Transporter’s original suspension would not suffice for handling the prowess of the tuned 993 Turbo—with its ability to go from 0-60 mph in around 5.1 seconds and reach top speeds of approximately 170 mph—hence, the shocks, control arms, and springs have been upgraded.
The interior hasn't been left untouched, either. The bench in the second row was removed to make way for six bucket seats, a Porsche steering wheel and gauges, and a substantial central tunnel.
As for the price? In 2002, the tuner’s asking price was 168,000 euros, excluding the cost of the T4 itself. A construction crew has never moved so quickly.
