On Friday, the day before Pope Francis' funeral, his coffin will be on display at St. Peter's Basilica from 1:00 AM to 1:00 PM Eastern Time. By Thursday evening, about 100,000 people had paid tribute to the pope, with thousands more arriving overnight.

At 2:00 PM Eastern Time on Friday, the ceremony to close the coffin will take place, presided over by the Camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who is managing the Church during the vacancy of the Apostolic See. Other high-ranking clergy will also attend the ceremony.

The funeral of the Holy Father will be held on Saturday at 4:00 AM Eastern Time.

About 130 official delegations and approximately 200,000 faithful are expected to attend Francis's funeral. U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania are scheduled to arrive before midnight. According to American press reports, former U.S. President Joe Biden might also be in attendance.

Extraordinary Security Measures in Rome

As a result, Rome is implementing the highest level of security measures. The city will be patrolled by land, water, and air. Additional police and military units are arriving from other regions of Italy. An Italian destroyer is stationed at the port of Fiumicino, while Eurofighter jets are patrolling the skies. A drone defense system will also be operational.

Cardinals from around the world gathered in Rome to discuss the future of the Church. On Thursday, a general congregation took place, with 113 cardinals in attendance. According to unofficial reports, the conclave is expected to begin on Monday, May 5, in the afternoon.
