Pope Francis reveals ongoing struggle with bronchitis impacts ability to deliver speeches
Speaking in one of Friday's audiences, the Pope disclosed that his "bronchitis" has made speaking challenging. This is another instance of a recurring issue. In late November and early December, the 87-year-old Francis suffered a severe respiratory tract inflammation that necessitated the cancellation of his planned trip to a climate conference in Dubai.
- I wanted to read the entire speech, but bronchitis has been a problem - Francis expounded on this issue during the meeting with the French pilgrims.
Pope's health issues
During the two prior same-day meetings, the Pope read his speeches with a rasping voice. This was obvious to all attendees, highlighting the severity of his health condition.
Back in December, when his illness was severe, he was speechless for several days. During that period, a Vatican priest substituted for him, reading his speeches. The Pope was also undergoing antibiotic treatment.
