Pope Francis traveled to Corsica on Sunday, December 15th, marking his first papal visit to the island. His approximately 10-hour visit was to attend a congress on popular piety in the Mediterranean region. He also planned to visit locations associated with Napoleon Bonaparte, born on the island.
The first pope on the island
The pope began his journey to Corsica on Sunday morning. He remained until the evening in the island's main city, Ajaccio, where he was welcomed by thousands of people. At the end of his visit, he met with France's President Emmanuel Macron at Ajaccio airport. Before meeting the French leader, the pope held a mass at Austerlitz Square.
This marks his 47th foreign pilgrimage and his third this year, following travels to Asia and Oceania and visits to Luxembourg and Belgium. It is also one of his shortest pilgrimages.
An island loved by tourists
Corsica, located in the Mediterranean Sea southeast of the mainland, is known as the "island of beauty." It is renowned for its exceptional cuisine, which includes wine, honey, chestnuts, charcuterie, and cheese. Each region produces its own unique cheese, crafted according to closely guarded recipes.
Corsica is a perfect destination for adventure seekers. It offers Europe's most famous trekking trail, the GR20, the chance to explore the ocean's depths in the Scandola Nature Reserve, and the opportunity to try canyoning in numerous canyons with rushing rivers.
On the other hand, those who prefer a more relaxed and leisurely vacation can enjoy the island's beaches. Here, soft, golden sands are kissed by crystal-clear waters. Corsica can confidently rival the famous French Riviera.
