Pope Francis addressed a letter to the bishops of the United States, in which he sharply criticized President Donald Trump's immigration policy.

In his message, announced on Tuesday, Francis noted that "the rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality." The Pope emphasized that deportations violate the dignity of many people who often leave their countries due to extreme poverty, lack of security, or persecution.

Pope recognizes "right to defense"

At the same time, Pope Francis acknowledged the nation's right to defend itself and protect the community from individuals who have committed violence or serious crimes.

He emphasized that the deportation of people who, in many cases, have left their homeland due to extreme poverty, lack of security, exploitation, persecution, or serious environmental destruction violates the dignity of many men and women, as well as entire families, placing them in a situation of particular vulnerability.
