Pope Francis chooses simplicity for his final rites, shuns pomp

Pope Francis has expressed his desire to have a humble burial akin to any other Christian, prioritizing dignity without needing any special distinction. In an interview for the book Successor, he revealed his wish for his final resting place in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, foregoing the traditional display of his body on a catafalque instead of lying in a coffin.

Once again, Pope Francis exemplifies a modest approach to his papacy. He shared his plans for his final rites with Spanish Vaticanist Javier Martinez-Brocal. He clarified that his funeral would deviate from the norm by having only one vigil instead of the customary two, and there would be no separate ceremony for sealing the coffin.

Francis conveyed his desire for his sendoff to be dignified yet simple and reflective of a common Christian's funeral, departing from more elaborate papal funerals.

"I talked with the master of ceremonies, and we decided to simplify the proceedings significantly," Francis acknowledged, underscoring his preference for a modest farewell.

He has a special connection with the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, choosing it as his final resting place. He frequents the sanctuary for prayer before and after international journeys and during significant life events, marking it as a place of profound personal significance even before his papacy.

In other Vatican news, concerns about Pope Francis's health were sparked when he was absent from the traditional Good Friday procession at the Roman Colosseum, opting to remain in the Vatican. This decision was made out of concern for his health. Despite this, he was at the Service of the Lord's Passion in St. Peter's Basilica the same day.

Additionally, his decision to abstain from delivering the sermon on Palm Sunday due to a notably weak voice was notable. However, his physician has stated that while the Pope experiences moments of fatigue, his overall health is consistent with someone his age.
