Poland foils GRU plot: Key operative arrested in extradition drama
Polish authorities have arrested 44-year-old Aleksander B., marking the most significant blow to Russian military intelligence, the GRU, in three years, reports "Gazeta Wyborcza".
The arrest of Aleksander B. by Polish authorities represents a significant setback for Russian military intelligence, the GRU. According to "Gazeta Wyborcza", the 44-year-old Russian coordinated a covert operation in Warsaw in August 2024. The operation aimed to assess the routes of courier shipments to the USA and Canada, as well as the security measures involved.
The prosecution claims that the operation sought to prepare for a terrorist act. Russian intelligence allegedly planned to send explosives and flammable materials overseas. Information gathered by Polish authorities suggests that Aleksander B. might have been a GRU agent.
Russia's desperate attempt
It was noted that "he was so valuable to the Russians that they made a desperate attempt to prevent his extradition to Poland." "Russia submitted its own extradition request, competing with Poland's, arguing that they needed to try him in the country for alleged crimes. However, the court in Bosnia and Herzegovina decided to extradite him to Poland, not Russia," reports "Gazeta Wyborcza".
