Pentagon confirms THAAD missile system ready in Israel
During a visit to Kyiv, Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin confirmed that the advanced THAAD missile defense system, supplied by the U.S. military, has arrived in Israel and is "ready" for use. This weapon, in some respects, outperforms the globally respected Patriot system.

The United States Secretary of Defense has not yet confirmed whether the THAAD system has been deployed by Israel. However, he emphasized that Americans are capable of activating it quickly. This is the first time the THAAD system has been stationed in Israel for combat use; previously, it was sent only for exercises.
THAAD system already in Israel
Austin cautiously expressed his opinion on the anticipated Israeli attack on Iran. He stated that it is difficult to determine exactly what this Israeli attack will look like, adding that Israel will make the final decisions. Austin also emphasized that Americans will do everything in their power to reduce tensions in the Middle East and expressed hope that both sides will initiate a de-escalation process, allowing further developments to be observed.
A system better than the Patriot?
According to earlier information from the Pentagon, THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) aims to strengthen Israeli defense following missile attacks from Iran that occurred in April and October. Israel was targeted with, among others, ballistic missiles. Approximately 100 American soldiers will operate the THAAD system, deployed to Israel specifically for this purpose.
The THAAD system was developed to intercept short- and medium-range ballistic targets. It has greater interception capabilities than the Patriot system, but it is considered a complement to it.
The THAAD system can destroy targets at distances of 90-120 miles and at altitudes of up to 90 miles. Its built-in radar allows for searching, tracking, and identifying objects within a range of up to 620 miles.
