On Wednesday, December 11, the Pentagon announced the establishment of a new office responsible for implementing artificial intelligence technology in military systems. The United States Department of Defense aims to significantly accelerate the development of autonomous weapons, according to reports from thehill.com.

The United States plans to "integrate" thousands of AI-powered autonomous drones into the army under the Replicator initiative. Another project involves developing defense systems against such devices.

Washington will spare no expense in research, emphasizing that if such solutions fall into the hands of Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea, it would pose a serious threat to national security.

Millions of dollars for the weapons of the future

The Pentagon, as mentioned, will allocate $100 million for work on implementing AI technology in the military in 2024 and 2025. For now, these are experimental initiatives. The Department of Defense also plans to collaborate with small companies on this issue, allocating an additional $40 million for them.

The work focuses not only on creating autonomous weapons but also on developing tools that will improve the efficiency of military operations.
