Parents urge caution after baby suffocates in sling tragedy
The parents of a deceased infant are warning against the use of baby slings after their son died from suffocation in a sling.
James Alderman’s parents, who lost him in a tragic accident, are cautioning others about the potential dangers associated with using baby slings. Their seven-week-old son, Jimmy, slipped from the sling during feeding and suffocated. Despite a quick response from the parents and rescuers, the boy died three days later in the hospital.
The tragedy occurred in 2023 when Jimmy’s mother, Ellie, was preparing to leave home. She placed her son in a sling and started feeding him, unaware he had slipped. The boy’s father, George Alderman, recalls that everything appeared normal until he saw his terrified wife holding their non-breathing son. "He was lying on his back and was white, not breathing," he recounted to MailOnline journalists.
Warning about slings
Coroner Lydia Brown has warned the British health service, stressing that parents lack sufficient information regarding the safe use of slings.
Her report was sent to the sling manufacturer Beco and expert Madeleine Boot. James's parents are advocating for greater awareness and education on this issue to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
