A year ago, Lucas Paqueta missed an excellent opportunity to transfer to one of the best clubs in the world. The Brazilian was close to moving to Manchester City, but the transfer fell through because an investigation was initiated against him.
At that time, the English Football Association investigated Paqueta because it was suspected of breaching rules against gambling among players. Specifically, it was alleged that someone in his entourage had been involved with betting.
The player was accused after the investigation lasted for over half a year. He faced four charges alleging that he deliberately received yellow cards to benefit those who bet that such incidents would occur in matches he participated in.
"I’m extremely surprised and upset to see that the FA have decided to charge me. For nine months, I’ve cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can. I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name. Due to the ongoing process, I will not provide any further comment," responded the West Ham United player to the scandal.
Paqueta has until June 3 to submit his explanations. According to the Daily Mail, he faces enormous consequences, as the British source claims he could be suspended for as long as ten years, which could ruin his football career.
