Two years following the premiere of the Oscar-nominated "The Hand of God" for the best international feature film category, the Italian director is back with a fresh project. The yet-to-be-titled work of Paolo Sorrentino will star acclaimed actor, Gary Oldman.

The filmmaker's significant breakthrough happened a decade ago with the release of "The Great Beauty." The film tells the story of an aging journalist, Tony Servillo, who roams the streets of Rome, reminiscing about his fervent but irrecoverably lost youth. The film garnered an Oscar for the best non-English language film. However, it was not Sorrentino's debut.

By that time, the Italian director had been making films for over 20 years. Two years prior to his Oscar recognition, he successfully directed "This Must Be the Place" featuring Sean Penn and Frances McDormand in the lead roles. Post-2014, his notable works include a segment of "Rio, I Love You," "Youth" packed with a star-studded cast, among them Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, Jane Fonda, and a film called "Them" starring Kasia Smutniak. He also gained significant popularity for the TV series "The Young Pope" and "The New Pope" featuring Jude Law and John Malkovich (in the latter).

The Latest Sorrentino Film: What Do We Know About It?

As per Deadline's report, Sorrentino's latest film unfolds the narrative of Partenope, an ancient moniker for Naples and a mythical mermaid who failed to win over Odysseus. The plot spans from her birth in 1950 right up to the present day. Her story is used to depict not only the lives of the individuals she encounters but also the director's hometown, which is both endearing and menacing.

Joining the cast alongside the Hollywood star are names like Celeste Dalla Porta, Silvia Degrandi, Isabella Ferrari, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Peppe Lanzetta, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Stefania Sandrelli, Alfonso Santagata, Nello Mascia, and Biagio Izzo. Sorrentino is handling both the script and the directorial aspects. The film is projected to continue the narrative set forth in "The Hand of God" and contain the artist's personal insights.

The first pictures related to the project have also been published by Deadline, showcasing both behind-the-scenes shots and stills from the film.
