Palestinian authority halts Al Jazeera amid misinformation row
The Palestinian Authority has suspended the operations of the Al Jazeera channel, accusing it of interfering in its internal affairs. This decision responds to allegations of misinformation and incitement to rebellion, against the backdrop of the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump as the President of the United States.
The Palestinian Authority announced the suspension of the Qatari channel Al Jazeera, citing interference in Palestine's internal affairs. The decision was made Wednesday evening and includes the suspension of broadcasting and the activities of the station's journalists.
The decision of the Palestinian Authority is a reaction to allegations of misinformation and incitement to rebellion allegedly spread by Al Jazeera. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the suspension would last until the station's legal status is corrected.
Al Jazeera criticized the authorities' decision, claiming it is an attempt to cover up the conflict over control of the West Bank, where Tel Aviv is illegally settling its Israeli citizens according to international law.
Preparations for Trump's inauguration
In recent weeks, the Palestinian Authority forces have been conducting an offensive against Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militias, which claim to be more effective in fighting Israel than the Palestinian Authority.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas wants the militants to surrender and hand over their weapons to the authorities. "There will be no tolerance for this rogue group that operates outside the law," said General Anwar Rajab, the Palestinian security forces spokesperson.
The Palestinian Authority is intensifying efforts to neutralize Palestinian militants before Donald Trump's inauguration. The goal, as the AFP agency claims, is to demonstrate the capability to control the Gaza Strip after the end of the war with Israel. Approximately 10 people have already died as a result of these clashes.
