Oscar laureates in the race for Golden Raspberries: Crowe and Mirren nominated for worst roles

A day before the Oscar 2024 nominations were announced, the list of underwhelming productions was unveiled. These are films that didn't earn the recognition of critics, and often moviegoers as well. The film that received the harshest critics, "Expendables 4," starring 50 Cent, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Megan Fox, received a whopping seven nominations. This film also underperformed massively at the box office.

Other major contenders with five nominations each include the creators of "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" and "The Exorcist: The Confessor". An interesting addition to the list was "The Pope's Exorcist," which despite lukewarm reception by the critics, was popular among the cinema-goers. At Rotten Tomatoes, "The Pope's Exorcist" currently holds a 50% positive review rating, countered with an 81% enthusiastic audience response.

In "The Pope's Exorcist," Russell Crowe played the title role and now may join the group of Golden Raspberry winners who also have an Oscar to their name. Crowe had previously won the most prestigious award in Hollywood for his role in "Gladiator". This year, Helen Mirren finds herself in a similar predicament, garnering a Golden Raspberry nomination for her role in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods".

In the past, noteworthy actors such as Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio have found themselves in a similar situation as Crowe and Mirren. Bullock received an Oscar for "The Blind Side" and a Golden Raspberry for "All About Steve", while DiCaprio received the anti-award for "The Man in the Iron Mask" followed by the prestigious statuette for "The Revenant".

The Golden Raspberries 2024 winners will be announced on March 9, followed by the announcement of the Oscar winners the next day.
