Opening windows could deter burglars. Unveiling myths and effective home security measures

Many people wonder how to protect their homes or apartments from burglars during holidays, long weekends, vacations, or the New Year's season. Despite the various security measures often discussed, some - like window covering - are less valuable than you might think.

Avoid covering your windows before departing

Why is it advised not to cover your windows before leaving, even though it's a common practice? The security landscape has evolved significantly over the years, and previously effective strategies, like window covering, are no longer beneficial. Covering your windows tends to signal burglars that the premises are unoccupied. They may interpret this as an invitation to enter and explore freely. Conversely, an open window can often deter potential burglars.

Aside from leaving your windows open, it's also critical to securely close them. An effective anti-burglary measure could be investing in anti-burglary blinds or unique grills, especially for apartments situated on lower floors of a building.

How can you defend against burglary?

Beyond window security, there are several other worthwhile considerations.

  1. Don't leave items on your balcony: Leaving items such as bikes on the balcony could entice burglars to investigate further.
  2. Ask for assistance from a trusted individual in your vicinity: If possible, request that they periodically check on your apartment.
  3. Avoid discussing your travel plans publicly, especially specific dates and durations: This crucial information could easily fall into the wrong hands, such as those of robbers.
