Nurturing the perfect tomato: Essential watering techniques for optimal growth

Tomatoes, which belong to the Nightshade family, have significant requirements for nutrients and water. These plants can reach up to 5.9 feet in height. They require access to light and temperatures ranging from 60.8 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

The gardening advice website, coolgarden.pl, recommends close attention to watering tomatoes during flowering phases via the Onet portal. Attention is also necessitated during the fruit setting and growth periods.

Tomato watering should be less frequent but abundant. It's usually best to water them once a week. During dry spells, of course, more frequent watering is necessary.

"The soil should be sufficiently moist to root depth, allowing the roots to absorb the required amount of water. You can check soil moisture using a planting stick. A wet surface can be misleading as deeper layers often remain dry," advises onet.pl.

Tomato watering: important points to remember

Watering tomatoes is best done early in the morning before the plants are warmed by sunlight. This helps the soil warm up faster, creating a positive effect on the plants' condition.

"Avoid watering tomatoes with cold tap water. If rainwater isn't available, let tap water warm up before using it," it is suggested.

It's also important to note that tomatoes respond negatively to overwatering. Therefore, a balanced approach is necessary. Conversely, under-watering can also have adverse effects, potentially inhibiting the plants' growth.
